Diabetes Screenings
Nearly half of those with diabetes in Ohio are undiagnosed. FMIG aims to combat this statistic by coordinating free diabetes screenings every Thursday evening at the Columbus Free Clinic. Each fall, our partners at the Central Ohio Diabetes Association train medical students to administer blood glucose tests and provide test result counseling. Our volunteers will then able screen patients in the waiting area at the CFC. The CFC is a student-run free clinic that provides a wide variety of health care services to underserved patients in the community.
Volunteering as a diabetes screener is a great way to learn and practice a valuable skill, connect with patients and provide a much needed preventive service to the community. For information on becoming a volunteer, contact Heidy Sasvin or Sonya Wegman.
Mt. Carmel Outreach Van
For more than 25 years the Mount Carmel Community Outreach Mobile Coach Program has been providing free basic medical care to central Ohioans in need. From the underserved to the homeless, those with limited access to quality health care can come to 40-foot mobile medical coach that visits nine sites in central Ohio on a rotating schedule near where they live to get checkups, receive needed vaccinations, get urgent healthcare, receive mental health counseling, and obtain referrals to community health programs.
Volunteering with the Mount Carmel Mobile Health Van is a great opportunity for medical students to serve community members most in need, and practice patient interviewing and physical exam skills in a low stress environment. By nature of the size of the van, patient flow is slow enough to allow for plenty of one on one time with patients and plenty of time for mentorship from physicians and older students.

FMIG Workshops
As part of our ongoing mission to educate medical students about the Family Medicine profession we offer students exposure and practice in the clinical procedures involved in family medicine.
We offer about 8 workshops a year to not only give students exposure but to also give the opportunity for extra practice as a fun supplement for all students' medical education.
Check out our list of events for upcoming events and contact Neha Patel with any questions!
Pre-Med Initiative
FMIG has partnered with Alpha Epsilon Delta, an honor society for undergraduate students preparing for careers in the health care professions, to discuss ways we can help them throughout the process of gettin to medical school. We plan on having several events this year including a mock interview session on September 28th from 5-7PM for M1 and M2 students to help pre-med students practice their interview skills right before the interview season starts. Our other events include workshops about the new MCAT as well as med school application tips. For more information contact Jeanette Schnierle.
